Why La Grotta is Legendary
La Grotta isn't a traditional sand-and-sunbed beach, it's a natural limestone platform that juts into the Ionian Sea, sculpted by waves over millennia. The name means "The Cave," and you'll understand why the moment you arrive: the rock formations are riddled with sea caves, underwater tunnels, and arches where the light fractures into otherworldly blues and greens.
This is where locals come to cliff-jump, where couples swim into hidden grottos to kiss in private, and where photographers wait hours for the perfect sunset reflection. If you've seen promotional images of Paleokastritsa with dramatic cliffs and impossibly clear water, there's a good chance it was taken at La Grotta.
What to Expect at La Grotta Beach
Deep, Crystal Water
The water is 3–8 meters deep right off the platform, ideal for diving and snorkeling, but not suitable for young children or non-swimmers.
Cliff Jumping
Several jump points range from 2 to 7 meters high. Locals know the safe spots, watch where others jump before trying. Always check the water depth.
Cave Exploration
Bring a snorkel and flippers to explore the underwater arches. Some caves are shallow enough to stand in; others require freediving.
Best in Morning Light
The cliffs face east, so the water glows brightest in the morning. Arrive before 11 AM for the best visibility and fewer crowds.
Important Safety Notes
• No lifeguards on duty—swim at your own risk
• Rocks can be slippery; wear water shoes with good grip
• Always check for swimmers below before jumping
• Keep valuables secure—the platform is public and unmonitored
• Not recommended for children under 10 or weak swimmers
Apartments Near La Grotta Beach Paleokastritsa
Astacos Studios is located approximately 800 meters from La Grotta Beach, a scenic 10-minute walk along the coastal path, or a 3-minute drive if you prefer. Because La Grotta has no facilities (no tavernas, no sunbeds, no showers), most visitors treat it as a morning or sunset excursion rather than an all-day destination. Staying at our studios means you can walk over, spend 1–2 hours exploring, then return to shower, eat, and relax before heading to the main beach or another cove.
Our beachfront accommodation offers full kitchenettes (important if you're packing snacks for La Grotta), sea-view balconies where you can see the coastline all the way to the cliffs, and fast Wi-Fi for uploading those incredible cave photos. We've hosted thousands of guests who specifically request advice on visiting La Grotta—we'll tell you the best times, the safest jump points, and which caves are swimmable.
How to Get There from Astacos Studios
Walking (10 minutes): Exit our property and walk south along the main coastal road toward the monastery. After 500 meters, you'll see signs for "La Grotta." The path descends through olive groves and emerges at the top of the cliffs. Steps lead down to the platform. The walk is moderately steep, so wear good walking sandals or sneakers.
By bike or scooter (3 minutes): If you've rented a bike or scooter, you can ride directly to the small parking area near the clifftop. From there, it's a 2-minute descent on foot.
By boat: Some boat tours include a stop at La Grotta, allowing you to swim into the caves from the water. This is the most dramatic approach, but you'll miss the cliff-jumping experience.
What to Bring
Snorkel & mask: Essential for exploring the underwater caves and arches
Water shoes with grip: The rocks are sharp and slippery when wet
Waterproof phone case: You'll want photos, but the platform is wet and slippery
Towel & sunscreen: No facilities, so bring everything you need
Small backpack: To carry your gear down the cliffside path
Water & snacks: No food or drink available on-site
