Liapades Village - Traditional Life & Golden Beach

Liapades is a charming village 3km from Paleokastritsa, offering authentic Greek tavernas, a stunning sandy beach (Gefyra Beach), and a glimpse into non-touristy Corfu. Easy day trip from Astacos Studios.

Why Visit Liapades from Paleokastritsa

Liapades sits on the hillside just 3 kilometers south of Paleokastritsa, connected by a winding road that climbs through olive groves and cypress forests. While Paleokastritsa has embraced tourism with its beaches and boat tours, Liapades remains defiantly traditional, working village where locals still gather in the plateia (main square) for evening coffee, and where tavernas serve recipes passed down through generations.

The village is best known for two things: Gefyra Beach (also called Liapades Beach), a wide sandy cove with dramatic cliffs and clear water, and its excellent traditional tavernas that serve some of the best home-cooked Greek food in the region. Many guests at Astacos Studios take a half-day trip to Liapades, lunch at a taverna followed by an afternoon swim at Gefyra Beach.

What to Do in Liapades

Gefyra Beach (Liapades Beach)

A beautiful sandy beach with clear water, sunbeds, and a beach bar. Less crowded than Paleokastritsa beaches. Access via a steep road or steps from the village.

Traditional Tavernas

Liapades is known for authentic Greek tavernas serving sofrito, pastitsada, stifado, and fresh seafood. Prices are lower than tourist areas; portions are generous.

Village Walk

The old village center features narrow stone streets, Byzantine-style churches, and traditional Corfiot houses with terracotta roofs and green shutters.

Hilltop Views

From the upper village, you can see across the Ionian Sea to the Albanian coast. Sunset views are spectacular, especially from the church of Agios Nikolaos.

Staying at Astacos Studios in Paleokastritsa gives you the best of both worlds: the beaches and activities of a tourist hub, with easy access to traditional villages like Liapades. The 3-kilometer distance means you can visit Liapades without needing an overnight stay, perfect for travelers who want to experience authentic Greek village life but prefer beachfront accommodation.

Many of our guests follow a routine: mornings at Paleokastritsa beaches (right on our doorstep), lunch at a Liapades taverna (10-minute drive), afternoon swim at Gefyra Beach, then back to the studio for a siesta before evening activities. Our self-catering studios make this flexible schedule possible, no fixed meal times, no need to coordinate with tour groups.

By car or scooter (10 minutes): From Astacos Studios, take the main road out of Paleokastritsa heading east. After 2km, turn right at the sign for Liapades. The road climbs steeply with several hairpin turns beautiful views, but drive carefully. Parking is available in the village square and near the beach access road.

Where to Eat in Liapades

Liapades has several excellent family-run tavernas. We recommend:
Taverna Panorama: Hilltop location with views, known for slow-cooked beef stifado and fresh sea bream
To Stavros: In the village center, specializes in Corfiot dishes like sofrito (veal in white wine sauce) and bourdeto (fish stew)
Gefyra Beach Bar (at the beach): Casual beachfront spot with grilled meats, Greek salads, and cold beer
Expect to pay €8–15 per main course, significantly less than Paleokastritsa's beachfront restaurants, with equally good (often better) quality. Reservations not usually necessary, but call ahead if you have a large group.
