Why Lakones is Famous
Lakones sits 400 meters above sea level on the cliffs directly overlooking Paleokastritsa. From the village's famous Bella Vista viewpoint, you can see the entire Paleokastritsa bay system, six beaches, the monastery, fishing boats like toys in the water, and the Albanian mountains shimmering on the horizon. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany visited in 1909 and declared it "the most beautiful view in Europe." Locals still call the panorama "Bella Vista" in his honor.
The village itself is traditional Corfiot mountain architecture: stone houses with slate roofs, narrow cobbled lanes barely wide enough for a donkey, and tavernas built literally on the cliff edge. There are no beaches in Lakones, people come for the views, the hiking trails, the sunset dinners, and the sense of old Greece before mass tourism.
What to Experience in Lakones
Bella Vista Viewpoint
The main viewing platform offers 180-degree panoramas of Paleokastritsa, the Ionian Sea, and the Albanian coast. Free to visit, with photo benches and information plaques.
Cliffside Tavernas
Several tavernas have terraces cantilevered over the cliff, you eat moussaka while watching eagles circle below you. Golden Fox and Bella Vista Taverna are the most famous.
Photography Paradise
The combination of elevation, sea, cliffs, and coastline makes Lakones one of the most photographed spots in Corfu. Best light: early morning or late afternoon.
Hiking Trails
The old mule path from Lakones down to Paleokastritsa takes about 40 minutes. Steep and rocky, but stunning views at every turn. Most hikers go down, then taxi back up.
Paleokastritsa Accommodation Near Lakones
While Lakones has a few small guesthouses, most travelers prefer to stay in Paleokastritsa where the beaches, restaurants, and transportation links are located. Astacos Studios is perfectly positioned—you're at sea level for swimming and beach life, but only a 15-minute drive or taxi ride from Lakones when you want mountain views and sunset dinners.
Many of our guests make multiple trips to Lakones during their stay: once for the Bella Vista photos, again for a romantic sunset dinner, and sometimes a third time to hike the old mule path. The proximity means you're never locked into a single landscape, beach or mountain, tourist or traditional, you can experience both.
How to Get to Lakones from Astacos Studios
By car or scooter (15 minutes): From Astacos Studios, head out of Paleokastritsa on the main road toward Corfu Town. After 1.5km, turn right at the sign for Lakones. The road climbs steeply with multiple switchbacks, drive slowly and use the designated viewing pullouts. Park in the village square or at the Bella Vista viewpoint (free parking).
By taxi (€15–20 one way): We can arrange a taxi for you. Many drivers offer a package deal: drop you at Bella Vista for photos, pick you up after dinner at a taverna. Agree on the price before departure.
By hiking (experienced hikers only): The old mule path from Paleokastritsa to Lakones starts near the monastery. It's unmarked, steep (400-meter elevation gain), and takes 60–90 minutes. Only attempt in cool weather with proper shoes and water.
Where to Eat in Lakones
Lakones is famous for its cliffside tavernas, all of which claim to have the "best view in Corfu" (they're not exaggerating). Recommended options:
Bella Vista Taverna: Right at the viewpoint, specializes in grilled meats and Corfiot wine. Reserve a cliff-edge table for sunset.
Golden Fox: Family-run for 40+ years, known for moussaka, pastitsada, and generous portions.
Ask for a terrace table.
Colombo Restaurant: Slightly higher prices, more refined menu (seafood pasta, rib-eye steak).
Romantic atmosphere, ideal for couples.
Expect to pay €12–20 per main course. Reservations strongly recommended for sunset dining (May–September). Most tavernas close by 11 PM.
